STEPHENVILLE (May 21, 2017) — A poll of the Stephenville softball players showed a split in MVP voting between the school’s No.1 all-time and single-season home run hitter and its standout pitcher who also swings a big bat.
Senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo and junior pitcher Julia Flores are co-MVPs of the 2017 Honeybee club that collected a school-record 26 wins while winning an outright district championship for the second straight year. Team members also elected senior catcher Sami Shaffer as Offensive MVP, junior center fielder Morgan DiCiccio defensive MVP and junior first baseman Sam Luna the Honeybee Heart award recipient. DiCiccio was also named the team’s academic player of the year, quite an accomplishment on a team without a single player’s average grade below an 88.
The 8-4A champion Honeybees also learned their returning members will be competing at Disney World next spring, and head coach Rus Mayes said the goal is to fund the entirety of the trip through fundraising efforts by the team.
Shaffer continued to add scholarship money for her first year at Tarleton State, where she has signed a national letter of intent to accept a partial scholarship to join the TexAnn softball team. On Sunday, the 8-4A district catcher of the year was named the first recipient of the Play Ball Scholarship established by Chris and Amy Gifford. Chris Gifford addressed the team, coaches and families on hand. saying one senior boy and girl from the Yellow Jacket baseball and Honeybee softball teams will be awarded the scholarship each year. The first baseball recipient has not been named.
