
STEPHENVILLE— The Texan and TexAnn cross country teams were picked to finish third and fourth in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll released by the league Thursday afternoon.
For the Texans, they received 168 votes for third in the projected standings. West Texas A&M is the preseason favorite with 221 votes followed by Texas A&M-Commerce in second with 185.
The Texans have six returners (Peyton Heinig, Jarred Elizondo, Johen DeLeon, Quenten Lasseter, Joshua Perez, and Michael Simcho), from last year’s team that qualified for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.
The women received 147 total votes in the poll to place fourth. Midwestern State was picked atop the poll with 217 votes, followed by Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M tied for second with 181 votes.
The TexAnns will return five runners from last year’s squad that includes Emily Ayers, Andelynn Carleton, Lisa Flores, Esmeralda Fuentes, and Gretzel Jimenez.
Tarleton will open the cross country season on Friday, September 8 in Commerce at the East Texas Shootout hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce . The Lone Star Conference championship meet is set for Oct. 21 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
