WICHITA FALLS (November 30, 2017) – TexAnn Basketball dropped its Lone Star Conference opener on the road to Midwestern State, 66-56, on Thursday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The TexAnns (3-3, 0-1) had 18 turnovers and shot 29 percent from the floor against the Mustangs, who shot 47 percent and had 44 points in the paint to Tarleton’s 18.
Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while McKinley Bostad had 11 points.
Tarleton led in the early stages on a pair of layups by Katie Webster and one from Bostad for a 6-2 lead. Bostad had seven points and four rebounds in the game. The TexAnns built a 14-8 lead on Nina Alvarez’s jumper with 1:50 left in the first quarter but the Mustangs closed out on an 8-0 run to lead 16-14 after one. It was the last lead the TexAnns would have in the game.
Midwestern State led 27-22 and Bostad followed with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 27-24, but the TexAnns were held scoreless the final three minutes of the half. Midwestern led 31-24 at the break.
Tarleton opened the third quarter with a layup from Hailey and a 3-pointer from Tiara Tatum to make it 33-29. A 6-0 run by Midwestern followed to make it a double-digit lead at 39-29. The Mustangs went into the fourth quarter up 48-36.
The TexAnns scored seven points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs matched them on the other end every possession. Bostad’s 3-pointer with 4:33 left cut the deficit back to single digits at 58-51, but that was as close as Tarleton would get.
Alvarez scored eight points and had a pair of 3-pointers to lead all TexAnns off the bench. Tatum added seven points and Shelby Mankins scored four. Trejouir Wilson (2), Kylie Collins (2) and Baylee Peck (1) rounded out the TexAnn scoring efforts.
Tarleton will travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to take on Cameron on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
