STEPHENVILLE (December 2, 2017) — Tarleton’s Esmeralda Fuentes was named the 2017 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Runner of the Year, the league announced on Friday.

“I’m really proud of her,” said head coach Pat Ponder. “This award epitomizes the work that she put in this summer and the leadership that she provided for the team. I’m really happy for Esmeralda.”

The awards were voted on by the Lone Star Conference cross country head coaches.

Fuentes led the TexAnns to the Lone Star Conference title for only the second time in program history with a second-place individual finish in a time of 22:06.73. The sophomore was named All-Conference with her performance and advanced to the NCAA Regional meet. Fuentes led all TexAnns at Regionals, coming in 21st place (22:03.64).

Fuentes is the third TexAnn in the last five years to win the Women’s LSC Cross Country Runner of the Year award, joining Aly Coughlin (2015) and Lindsey Hinton (2013).
