STEPHENVILLE (January 27, 2018) — Tarleton State made a school-record 43 free throws and Katie Webster scored a career-high 29 points in a 86-81 Lone Star Conference victory over Midwestern State at Wisdom Gym Saturday.
Tarleton sophomore Mackenzie Hailey scored 21 and collected 12 rebounds, her 20th career double-double. Webster doubled up for the second time with 13 boards.
McKinley Bostad took over down the stretch for the TexAnns, scoring 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. She made four free throws and grabbed two defensive rebounds in the final 10 seconds. This after an assist on a key 3-point play by Hailey and a steal and layup moments later.
Tarleton won for the 10th time in 11 games, a stretch including seven wins in eight LSC contests.
Midwestern was paced by Kristin Rydell and Chelsea Adams with 17 points each and Whitney Taylor with 14.
FOR THE RECORD:
Hitting 43 of 46 free throws actually set two school records. They shattered the previous mark for free throws made, which was 34 against Houston Tillotson on February 20, 1993. They also shot the best percentage in school history when making at least 20, topping the 88.2 percent, against Austin College on Februrary 6, 1984.
McKINLEY IS McCLUTCH:
McKinley Bostad enjoyed her third double-digit fourth quarter of the season and all of them along with the key assist, steal and two late rebounds came in the final five minutes. The only TexAnn to reach score in double digits all 19 games, Bostad has consistently been at her best in the clutch. She scored 13 in the final three minutes and overtime against Eastern New Mexico before Christmas, has also had 11 and now 10-point fourth quarters and scored seven in the fourth against Cameron Thursday.
GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE:
For Tarleton, the 2-3 zone was the bedrock of success as they won eight of nine. But the TexAnns relied on big offensive numbers to stretch it to 10 of 11. They were 73-81 from the foul stripe this week (90.1 percent) and scored 172 points. They picked right up Saturday where they left off with their 31-point fourth quarter Thursday night. They scored 28 in the first Saturday, combining for 59 points while going 20-22 form the stripe in those periods.
CONTINUING THE CLIMB:
Tarleton State began the week in fifth place in the Lone Star Conference and ends it in third. The TexAnns defeated Cameron by the same 86-81 score on Thursday, avenging a 66-56 loss at MSU and a 70-63 loss to Cameron in Decmber. Here are the standings:
