(February 8, 2018) — Katie Webster scored half her 22 points in the fourth quarter for Tarleton State Thursday before McKinley Bostad won it and Kylie Collins sealed it for the TexAnns in a 63-59 Lone Star Conference victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The game was tied four times in the final period, but Tarleton never trailed because Webster put the TexAnns back on top three times while scoring their first 11 points of the fourth, and Bostad broke the final tie by hanging in the air sinking a floater to make it 61-59 with 34 seconds remaining. Webster stole the ball from Sadie Russell with 13 seconds left and got it to Kylie Collins who was fouled and buried both free throws for a two-possession Tarleton lead with only nine ticks left.
The TexAnns won for the 12th time in 14 games to stay within two games of LSC leader Angelo State. They visit ASU at 2 p.m. Saturday in San Angelo, where a win would give them a season sweep of the Rambelles while pulling within a game with the final four contests back home in Stephenville over the next two weeks.
A&M-Kingsville stayed in the game with a 9-0 run to tie Tarleton at 38-38 in the third. Tarleton scored the next five, but TAMUK answered with a field goal and a free throw in to narrow the gap to 48-46 entering the fourth. The Javelinas tied it up in the fourth at 48, 50, 56 and 58. Webster answered for 50-48 then 52-50 part of a personal 6-1 run that made it 56-51 before the Javelinas netted five in a row. Webster made it 58-56, the Javs answered once more then Bostad finally took some of the weight off her roommate’s shoulders.
TAMUK needed the 9-point rally in the third after Tarleton built a 33-24 halftime lead by hitting 6 of 9 from the arc. They where just 1 of 7 in the second half, making it a fight to the finish.
Webster grabbed 14 rebounds to finish with her second career double-double, and Tarleton needed it with Mackenzie Hailey collecting only 7 points and 3 boards, one of the most quiet nights in the sophomore forward’s Tarleton career. Tiara Tatum netted 8 points and Collins 7. Bostad and Makaila Tyer each added 6.
Angelica Wilson was a warrior inside, her 21 points and 18 rebounds keeping A&M-Kingsville alive until the final seconds. Russell and Shaq Debose each scored 9.
The Javelinas shot 43 percent and Tarleton just 34 percent, but the TexAnns held the advantage at the free throw line – 18-23 to 10-14 – and from the 3-point line – 7-16 to 3-9 – while committing six less turnovers than the hosts.
It’s the 18th consecutive Tarleton win over TAMUK and the 27th in their last 29 meetings for a 32-18 lead in the all-time series.
