AUSTIN – In their final tune-up before Lone Star Conference play begins this weekend, the TexAnns swept a doubleheader against St. Edward’s to continue their record-setting start to the season Wednesday afternoon.

“I am very proud of both wins today. We didn’t play our best, but it was nice to see this team win without their ‘A’ game,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “We will need to have a good practice tomorrow and get ready for a very good Texas A&M-Commerce team.”

Game 1: Tarleton 5, St. Edward’s 0

Tarleton put some offense on the board right out of the gate and that proved to be more than enough run support for Haley Freyman, who dealt her second complete game shutout of the young season.

The TexAnns worked two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases with two away in the opening frame before Tanna Huie made the Hilltoppers pay with a two-RBI double to left center to get the TexAnns on the board. Karli Herronfollowed up with an RBI single to put a cap on the three-run inning.

The offense tacked on one more in the second on a sacrifice fly from Nyka Wood to plate Kaitlyn Thomas and then another in the third on an RBI double by Herron to bring home Megan Durante, who led off the inning with a walk, to put the TexAnns up 5-0.

Those five early runs were more than enough for Freyman.

The right-handed senior twirled another gem from the circle with seven innings of shutout ball on just three hits and three walks. Freyman improved to 4-0 with the win.

Huie and Herron each had two hits in the game while Thomas and Marisa Flores had one hit each.

Game 2: Tarleton 8, St. Edward’s 4

Another early-inning onslaught set the tone for the TexAnns in the second game of the twin bill as seven runs over the first two innings helped Tarleton win its 12 game of the year.

The hits started early and often for the TexAnns as Maddie Quintanar sparked the scoring with a single, a stolen base, and the first run of the game after Nyka Wood drove her home with an RBI double for the first run of the game. The TexAnns added three more in the first on an RBI sacrifice fly from Karli Herron and a two-RBI single through the right side from Lexi Grimaldo to spot the TexAnns a 4-0 lead before the Hilltoppers grabbed their bats.

After St. Edward’s scored one in the first on a solo home run, Tarleton answered with a bigger home run in the second when Megan Durante teed off for a three-run blast to extend the lead out to 7-1.

St. Edward’s scored one more in the third and two in the fourth while Tarleton tacked on one in fourth on a sacrifice fly from Huie to bring the score to its final numbers.

Durante led the offensive attack with a 3-4 day at the dish with two runs scored and three RBI while Quintanar, Meghann Wrinkle, Wood, Herron, Grimaldo, and Elizabeth Svienty had one hit each to round out Tarleton’s nine-hit day.

Megan Rosewell got the start in the circle and allowed four runs in three innings of work before giving way to Jordan Withrow for the final four innings, over which she allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven. Withrow earned the win in relief to move to 5-0 on the year.

Tarleton will head to Commerce this weekend for a three-game series to begin Lone Star Conference action, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
