Blake Aragon, Bailey McBee and Shayden Toof are advancing to the State Track and Field Championships in Austin after their qualifying performances at the Region One Track and Field Meet in Lubbock Friday and Saturday.
Stephenville’s Hailey Martin (triple jump) and Kalli-Blake Bramlett (pole vault) finished third in their events and have a chance of being selected as the “9th qualifier”.
Aragon leaped a season-best 6-7 leap in the high jump and was the only Stephenville athlete to bring home a gold medal. Aragon’s got more in the tank after a personal best of 6-10 last season and McBee and Toof apparently have some more fuel of their own to burn.
Every Stephenville medalist improved their area performances with the battle in the triple jump between Martin and Toof highlighting things. In the area meet, Martin, topped Toof by 10 inches with a jump of 35-18 but Toof (2nd) turned the table in Lubbock uncorking a jump of 37-4 to Martin’s 36-3.75 (3rd).
In a sport measured by 1/100ths of a second Bailey McBee’s 100-meter hurdles improvement could be described as an “eternity” as she shaved more than a half second off her area meet time running a 14.78 as compared to her winning run of 15.34 at the area meet.
Bramlett was equally impressive in improving her height in the pole vault as she topped 10-6 after qualifying with a mark of 9-0.
The state meet is scheduled for May 10-12 in Austin at the Mike Myers Track Complex. Stephenville athletes may have an opportunity to attend a state qualifier’s meet but that has not been announced yet.
