SAN ANGELO – It’s been a season full of broken records for TexAnn Softball and the trend continued into the annual Lone Star Conference postseason awards banquet Thursday night as Tarleton earned a school-record 19 league honors.

“I’m thrilled by the representation of our team on the all-conference teams,” said second-year head coach Mark Cumpian. “It’s great to see the hard work of our team recognized throughout this conference, which is one of the best softball conferences in the nation. We’ll enjoy this tonight, but a brand-new season starts tomorrow. We can’t be content with our regular season accomplishments because we still have a lot of work to do to get where we set out to be.”

Four individual superlatives highlighted the evening.

Jordan Withrow was named the LSC Co-Pitcher of the Year and Academic Player of the Year while Tanna Huie and Georgia Capell were named the Co-Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively. The trio also earned All-LSC first team recognition, marking the first time since 2012 that Tarleton had three players named to the league’s top team.

Withrow enjoyed a banner sophomore season after stepping into the team’s top starting spot. The sophomore right-hander went 23-5 in the circle with a 2.29 ERA and led the Lone Star Conference with 220 strikeouts, which also made her the first player in school history to strike out over 200 in a season. She threw over 190 innings in the regular season and held opponents to a .199 opponent batting average.

She’s the second TexAnn in school history to earn the LSC Pitcher of the Year award, joining Hall of Famer Carla Geeslin who won the award in 2003.

Huie becomes the fourth Tarleton player in school history and the first since Samantha Swanda in 2011 to be named the Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year. The junior outfielder hit .416 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI in her debut campaign with the purple and white. She also scored 40 runs for the year. Huie finished the season No. 5 in the LSC in batting average and No. 9 in RBI.

apell smashed her way onto the league’s first team after an impressive rookie year that earned her the LSC Freshman of the Year award. She’s the second player in school history and first since Geeslin in 2001 to bring home the top freshman award from the LSC. She finished the season with the fourth-most home runs in the league and set a single-season record for home runs by a freshman with 16 on the year. She also hit .378 with 48 RBI, which was the sixth-most RBI in the league.

The accolades wouldn’t stop there. The TexAnns continued to fill up the second and third teams with six more student-athletes.

Megan Durante, Meghann Wrinkle, Karli Herron, and Nyka Wood were named to the Lone Star Conference second team. Durante hit .392 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI as the cleanup hitter in the Tarleton lineup while Wrinkle also boasted a batting average of .390 with 42 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. Herron, a newcomer to the Tarleton lineup, hit .331 in 47 games with eight home runs and 76 RBI at third base.

The school’s all-time leader in RBI, doubles, and games played, Nyka Wood, earned her fourth consecutive all-conference award with a second-team honor. The senior catcher hit .338 in her final regular season with 29 RBI and a .980 fielding percentage behind the dish.

Rounding out the team awards are Megan Rosewell and Marisa Flores, who were named to the All-LSC third team. Rosewell went 17-1 in the circle with a 1.67 ERA and five shutouts in her senior season with Tarleton while Flores hit .288 with 23 RBI and 24 runs scored in 51 games at second base.

The Lone Star Conference also recognized the league’s top defenders Thursday night with the annual Gold Glove awards and the right side of the TexAnn infield was tabbed as Durante and Flores were named the league’s best defensive first and second basemen, respectively. It’s the second straight Gold Glove award for Durante, who boasted a .986 fielding percentage with 336 putouts and 11 assists at first base, and the first for Flores, who was the league’s top-fielding second baseman at .983 with 95 putouts and 79 assists.

Withrow and Durante rounded out the evening with recognition for their efforts in the classroom as the two were named all-academic. Withrow was named the LSC Academic Player of the Year and All-Academic while Durante earned All-Academic honors. Withrow becomes the first player in school history to bring home the league’s top academic honor.

The 17 Lone Star Conference awards sets a new standard for TexAnn Softball, topping the previous high of 15 set by the 1999 TexAnn Softball team.
