Stephenville mounted a miracle comeback after trailing 9-1 by scoring 16 unanswered runs and swamped Benbrook 16-9 for a two-game sweep and the Bi-District title in Cleburne Saturday.

Things looked bleak for the Yellow Jackets (15-13-2) who won game one Friday but looked like they would be forced into a doubleheader before Stephenville took control.

It looked like it was going to be an easy game early on when Gabe Moore tripled to drive in Gage Graham and the Jackets were on top 1-0 after the top of the first inning.

Kendal Storrs got the start for Stephenville but the Jackets pitching on the day was a team effort as Storrs went three innings, Zane Smith worked one inning, Caleb Smith went two stanzas and Daniel Luna pitched one.

After not showing a lot of firepower the first four innings Stephenville exploded for 14 runs through the fifth and sixth. Down 9-7, the Jackets took the lead for good when Derek Gifford’s first-pitch triple scored three runs and Stephenville poured it with as many runs as Benbrook scored the whole game.

The Jackets has their eyes on the baseball as they pounded out 13 total hits. Moore, Kade Averhoff and Klay Krause came up with three hits each, Cade Dunavent smacked two and Mason Castleberry and Gifford had one each.

Moore and Krause tied for the RBI lead with four each, Gifford added three, Averhoff had two, and Castleberry, Tyeler Reed and Dunavent had one RBI each.

When the Jackets weren’t hitting the ball they were sneaky on the base path as Dunavent and Graham nabbed two and Krause had one.

Stephenville will now advance to play Iowa Park which was a 5-0 winner Thursday over Snyder. Stay tuned to The Flash Today for upcoming details.
