Seth Riddle is the new head boys basketball coach at Huckabay High School and for those who follow area high school sports, they probably remember the Lipan Indian who went to Hardin Simmons to play basketball.
Unfortunately, Riddle’s college playing career was cut short by stress fractures in his feet but he stayed in school leaving Hardin Simmons for Weatherford College and wrapping up his education at Tarleton State.
Huckabay will be Riddle’s first head coaching job after a successful three-year stint at Poolville where he served as the boys assistant. It was also at Poolville where he learned the value of rock-solid defense.
“I’m going to want the kids to buy into our defense,” Riddle said. “If we play solid defense and don’t turn over the basketball we are going to give ourselves a chance to be in most of the games we play.”
Riddle has already made a few trips to the Huckabay campus from his home in Mineral Wells where his wife Zayle teaches school. The couple has two daughters Vivian (2) and Scarlett (4 months).
“I’m excited about all of this and enjoying meeting the kids,” Riddle said. “I’ve been up here a couple of times for open gym.”
Riddle’s relationship with athletic director Caleb Walls goes way back to his high school playing days when he was at Lipan and Walls was at Lingleville.
“I had heard about the job and talked to Caleb,” Riddle said. “He has known me since I was playing in high school and he encouraged me to turn in an application.”
When he’s not busy coaching, teaching or being a dad Riddle likes to get outdoors where he enjoys golf, fishing and hunting.
