Adams, Roberts named Tarleton Athletics Student-Athletes of the Year for 2017-18

STEPHENVILLE – All-Americans Blake Adams and Hailey Roberts have been selected as the first-ever recipients of the Tarleton Athletics Student-Athletes of the Year for their dedication to excellence in 2017-18.

“This is a new award that we started last year and I can’t think of two better student-athletes than Blake and Hailey to receive this first award,” said Athletic Director Lonn Reisman. “Each one of these student-athletes brought so much success to their programs and were excellent ambassadors for Tarleton Athletics and Tarleton State University. There is no doubt they will find great success in their future endeavors.”

Last spring, Adams enjoyed arguably the greatest offensive seasons in program history, in which he became the first player in program history to be named to three different All-America teams. The senior from Longview hit .390 with 74 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, and 69 RBI – all from the leadoff spot in the Tarleton lineup. He led the league in runs scored, home runs, slugging percentage (.781), and hit by pitches (25) while also ranking among the top three in the LSC in batting average, hits, and RBI. His 17 home runs were the second-most in a single season in school history and the most in a season for a Texan since the school joined the NCAA.

He was named the LSC Tournament Championship MVP after hitting .667 with six runs scored, seven RBI, and three home runs for the weekend. He is a two-time All-LSC First Team selection and a three-time All-Region honoree in his career. With Adams leading the charge, the Texans earned a trip to the fourth NCAA regional tournament in school history after winning the LSC Tournament Championship.

For Roberts, this award caps off an incredible career, which saw her rewrite the Tarleton Volleyball record book during her four-year playing career.

She was named an All-America First Team outside hitter and the South Central Region Player of the Year by the AVCA and D2CCA – which was her third consecutive media-voted honor – and was already one of the first players in school history to even receive all-region honors from the AVCA in 2015. She became the first TexAnn in program history to earn Regional Player of the Year from the AVCA. Roberts was also named to the AVCA All-Region first team and D2CCA All-Region first team.

Roberts led the team with 544 kills as a senior in 2017, including 4.65 kills per set, on a .248 hitting percentage. She also led the team with 602.5 points and has 31 aces, 29 assists, 355 digs, and 50 blocks in her senior season. She broke the school’s all-time kills record as a junior and finished second all-time on the Lone Star Conference list for kills (2,405).

In addition to her regional recognition by the AVCA and D2CCA, the senior from Cedar Park was also named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and was a first-team all-conference selection. She was a six-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week award winner in 2017 and earned 17 career weekly honors in her four-year career.

Roberts racked up seven different All-America honors in her storied Tarleton career. She was a third-team All-American by Daktronics as a freshman and then followed up with three straight All-America honors by the D2CCA and AVCA to close out her career.
To be eligible for the Student-Athlete of the Year award, the athletes must have been awarded a Student-Athlete of the Month award during their season of competition, in addition to maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher and staying in good academic standing. The student-athletes must also be active in the community and adhere to the university core values, as well as the policies of the athletic department and their respective teams.

Roberts will be recognized and receive her award during the intermission of Saturday’s volleyball match against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 12 p.m. in Wisdom Gym. Later that evening, Adams will be recognized and receive his award during the first-quarter break of the football game against UT Permian Basin at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
