Senior Jaci Morton’s season-high 23 points came at just the right time as Stephenville escaped with a 50-48 win on the road in Brownwood Tuesday night.
The Bees (20-6, 4-0) are ranked number 9 in the latest TABC basketball poll, but their ranking did little to intimidate the Lady Lions who used a strong third quarter to go up 37-33 after Stephenville led 25-21 at halftime.
In the first half, Stephenville should have had a more significant lead, but couldn’t connect on eight of the 11 free throws they were awarded. Stephenville managed eight first-half field goals including three from long range with two scored by Hannah Bernays and one by Madison Gilder.
Morton only added four points to first-half scoring and then caught on fire with six third-quarter points and finishing with 14 points in the fourth quarter. Morton was the Bees go-to player down the stretch and the resulting fouls from Brownwood gave her the opportunity to hit 8-of-9 free throws in the final period.
The win leaves Stephenville with a perfect slate through the first half of district play, and they will be traveling to Mineral Wells January 22 for a 6:15 p.m. contest. Stephenville’s next home game will be January 25 which is also a Coaches for the Cure game.
Scoring—Kaylee Dahl 2, Madison Gilder 4, Kassidy Nowak 4, Hannah Bernays 9, Jaci Morton 23, Alee McClendon 8.
