Capell, Huie named to 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA DII Player of the Year Watch List

STEPHENVILLE – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released its annual Top-50 Watch List for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year Thursday afternoon and Tarleton State University has two players to keep an eye on – Georgia Capell and Tanna Huie.

The top 50 list is comprised of returning NFCA All-Americans from last season and a slew of players submitted by head coaches and selected by the NFCA Division II All-America committee. They are the second and third players in Tarleton history to be named to the Top-50 Watch List, joining Katelyn Conlee in 2016.

Capell, who is a returning NFCA All-American from a year ago, has already racked up a grand number of accolades in her brief collegiate career.

In addition to being the first freshman in program history to earn All-America honors, she was named the South Central Region and Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year as well as all-conference and all-region. Earlier this season, she was named a Preseason All-American by Fastpitch News.

Last season, Capell hit .397 and led the team with 20 doubles and 17 home runs while driving in 53 RBI. Through the opening weekend of this season, Capell already has five hits including a double and a grand slam with four runs scored and five RBI while transitioning to a new defensive position (OF).

Huie is among the 21 players to be added to the Top-50 watch list by the NFCA All-America Committee.

In her debut season with Tarleton last year, Huie became the fourth Tarleton player in school history – and the first since Samantha Swanda in 2011 – to be named the Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year, as well as All-LSC first team, NFCA All-Region Second Team, and D2CCA All-Region Second Team.

As a junior, she hit .414 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI while also scoring 45 runs for the year. Huie finished the regular season No. 5 in the LSC in batting average and No. 9 in RBI. Through the first weekend of this season, Huie is hitting .333 with seven hits and three RBI and a stolen base.

Capell, Huie, and the No. 14 TexAnns will return to action for six more tournament games at the St. Mary’s College Classic in San Antonio this weekend, beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. against St. Edward’s.
