Ciara Johnston scored four times as #1 Stephenville (17-0-2) steamrolled Mineral Wells in a blustery wind to open district play with a 4-0 win over the Lady Rams at Lem Brock Field Friday.
Gracie Bales set up Johnston’s first score while Haleigh Beam assisted on the second. Johnston completed a hat-trick with a booming goal from 20-yards out and picked up a fourth when Bales added her second assist. It was a beautiful finesse crossing play that Johnson tapped off the back of her foot for the goal.

“We picked to go against the wind in the first half,” coach Casey Weil said. “We have more control whereas you are chasing the ball when you are playing with the wind at your back.”
The Honeybees did play the start of the second half on their end of the field as they made the adjustments of kicking with a 20-mile an hour wind rather than against it.

Once the adjustments were made it was Stephenville’s contest the remainder of the way as Mineral Wells got off a couple of kicks that didn’t come close to threatening the shutout win.
So how did the Bees seem have Mineral Wells’ number?
“We do a lot of watching of film,” Weil said with a grin. “We are looking for the tendencies we can take advantage of and getting the matchups we want.”
Stephenville will be hosting Graham at Lem Brock Field next Tuesday, but it won’t be the varsity playing. The Honeybees JV will play Graham who has already lost to Stephenville’s varsity 10-0 in tournament play. The score could probably have been twice that as Graham is a second-year program not ready to take on the state’s number one Class 4-A team.
