STEPHENVILLE – No. 19 Tarleton put on an offensive show all the way through the lineup to back a complete-game win from Jordan Withrow as the TexAnns defeated No. 6 West Texas A&M 9-3 in the series opener Friday.
After the first two innings went by with no score, a Lady Buff error opened the door with one out. Georgia Capell beat out a potential double play to keep the inning alive and Tanna Huie capitalized with a two-run, opposite-field home run to put Tarleton on top 2-0.
That score carried into the fifth when Tarleton tacked on one more on an RBI hit by pitch from Destiny Crumpley to make it 3-0 after five. The insurance run proved large as West Texas A&M answered with three in the sixth to tie it at 3-3.
Morgan Ling got the Tarleton sixth off and running by coaxing a one-out walk. Jessica Lee kept it going with a walk of her own to set up the TexAnns with two on and one away. Elizabeth Svienty ripped a deep fly ball to left center that was caught for the second out, but a good read and tag from Ling put runners on the corners for Georgia Capell.
Capell laced a 3-1 pitch into left field to put Tarleton on top 4-3 and Huie cashed in with a three-run homer – her second of the night – to break the game wide open at 7-3. Amanda Conner tacked on a two-run double to extend the lead out to 9-3 and Jordan Withrow sat down the Lady Buffs in order in the seventh to seal it.
Tarleton had every batter in the lineup reach base and eight of them recorded at least one hit on the night. Seniors Huie, Karli Herron and Lexi Grimaldo led the way with two hits each while Svienty, Capell, Crumpley, Conner and Lee had one each.
Jordan Withrow earned her 19th win of the season with a complete-game victory. The junior right-hander allowed three unearned runs on five hits and seven walks while striking out 13.
The series will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Stephenville. It will be Senior Day at the field for Huie, Herron, Svienty, Grimaldo and Conner. There will be Steel City Pops for sale and free hot dogs while supplies last.
