Capell, Crumpley named to preseason All-WAC team; Texans picked seventh

STEPHENVILLE – As the Tarleton Softball team readies for its debut season in the Western Athletic Conference, they’ll do so looking to turn the tide of the annual WAC preseason poll that had Tarleton picked for a seventh place finish.

“Judging by last year’s standings, I’m not sure I would have picked us seventh. I know we’re new to NCAA Division I and the WAC and we need to earn our place, but the tradition we’ve built here speaks for itself. I know that needs to translate at the next level before we can expect the same kind of preseason respect we had at Division II,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “And it’s hard to say how the season will play out. Maybe we will finish seventh – but I can guarantee, if we do, we will be the toughest, most competitive seventh seed the WAC has ever seen.”

Meanwhile, Georgia Capell and Destiny Crumpley’s reputation of dominance has carried over to the next level as the Texan tandem was named to the Preseason All-WAC Team.

Capell enters her second-effort junior season having already set the Tarleton program record for home runs (42). She is a career .401 hitter with 138 RBI and is closing in on multiple all-time offensive records. Capell is a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and a two-time Academic All-American. She was twice named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA National Top 50 Player of the Year Watch List.

Crumpley is the only senior to have returned to the lineup after last year’s COVID-shortened spring season. The Little Elm native was named to the All-LSC First Team in 2019 and will enter the season as a career .343 hitter with 18 doubles, 17 home runs and 79 RBI.

Tarleton was 19-4 last year, including a perfect 6-0 in Lone Star Conference action when the season came to an abrupt end last March. The Texans were the only undefeated team remaining in the LSC standings after upending No. 2 UT Tyler in a doubleheader sweep on March 6. The Texans will open their inaugural Division I campaign on February 12 with a trip to the Abilene Christian Invitational.
