Softball drops WAC opener at Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Tarleton dropped both games of its WAC-opening doubleheader against Dixie State Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Dixie State 8, Tarleton 7 (8)
Tarleton lost an extra-inning slugfest in the WAC opener Friday afternoon.

After DSU scored first on a solo homer, Georgia Capell snapped Tarleton’s 37 scoreless inning drought with a big, two-strike swing. The junior All-American drove a two-out, bases-clearing double into the right center gap to put the Texans on top 3-1. She later came in to score on an error to extend it to 4-1.

The Trailblazers pulled closer with a two-run single in the fourth, but Tarleton answered with two of their own in the sixth. A wild pitch and an RBI double from Destiny Crumpley gave Tarleton its three-run lead back at 6-3.

The teams traded runs over the next two half-innings with Tarleton scoring its final run of the game in the sixth when Capell blasted off for her 48th career home run.

The Trailblazers answered with three in the sixth the tie it and one in the eight to win on the walk-off.

Tarleton had 10 base hits in game one and seven came from the top three hitters in the lineup – Capell (3), Riggs (2) and Morgan Medford (2). Capell’s four RBI led the team while Crumpley, Miranda Pruitt and Jordan Dickerson had one hit each to round out the offense.

Game 2: Dixie State 7, Tarleton 1
Tarleton dropped the second game of the twin bill 7-1.

 Bailee Riggs drove in Capell in the third inning on a fielder’s choice for Tarleton’s only run of the game. The Trailblazers scored in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull away from Tarleton.

Capell was a flawless 2-2 at the dish in game two with a double. MacKenzie Peterson, Hallie Saintignan and Dickerson accounted for the other three hits for the game. Tristan Bridges pitched all seven innings.

Tarleton and Dixie State will close out the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT.
