SAN ANTONIO – Alejandra Cambronero came into Tarleton’s first tournament of the spring as the No. 3 golfer in the group, but she was No. 1 for the team early, turning in a season-best round to start the Islander Classic.

Cambronero shot +5 (76) in Round 1 of the tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio on Monday. She beat out her previous season-best round by a stroke, a +6 (77) in the first round of the Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial on Sept. 13.

Tarleton nearly got both rounds completed on Monday, but Round 2 was suspended with just a few holes to go for most participants due to darkness. Golfers will wrap up their rounds first thing Tuesday morning before playing the third and final round of the tournament.

The Texans sit in 14th after Day 1 at +31 as a team. Mathilde Brogens, Tarleton’s No. 1 golfer this week, leads the team with an overall score of +10. She shot +6 (77) in the first round, and is +4 through 17 holes in Round 2. Brogens currently sits tied for 23rd on the individual leaderboard.

Sofia Rodriguez is at +13 on the tournament with a hole still be played in her second round. She’s at +7 in Round 2 after scoring +6 (77) in Round 1. Cambronero finished her second round at +8 (79), +13 now for the tournament. She and Rodriguez are tied-40th.

Tarleton’s freshmen duo of Angela Inocian and Bridgett Joeris are at +23 and +26, respectively. Inocian shot +10 (81) in the first round and is +13 with a hole to play in Round 2. Joeris shot +14 (85) in the first round and +12 (83) in the second.

Brackenridge Park Golf Course is a Par 71, 5,986 yard course. The host team leads the other 17 at +8. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Anastacia Johnson sits atop the individual leaderboard at -3.  She shot -1 (70) in Round 1 and is -2 through 15 holes in Round 2.
