Numerous folks from the Stephenville and surrounding area volunteered their time to help “a neighbor” in need.  Carbon resident, Mary Griffin, lost her home to the recent Carbon wildfires.  The CR Project of Comanche County teamed up with numerous area volunteers to help build Mary Griffin a new home.  The large group of volunteers showed up to the site of the home build on Thursday to begin working on building the home.  At the time of their arrival, there was only a slab.  The volunteers worked Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Mary’s new home.  After just four days, the home is near completion.  Mary is expected to be able to move into her new home within the next two weeks.

Mary was very, very grateful to all the volunteer workers. Photo 2 shows the group before beginning work on the first day which was Thursday.  Volunteers came from as far away as Canton, Athens, Brownwood, Stephenville, Comanche, and Wimberly (and probably more). Water, Gatorade and snacks were provided and the volunteers were fed a breakfast, lunch and an evening meal.  Many of the people there made new friends during this wonderful opportunity.  But it sure was hot!

Plans to build a second “replacement” home are underway.  Construction of the second home is expected to get underway in about six weeks or so.

  1. Stories like this need to be the lead on national newscasts. Really awesome, especially in this heat.
