Billy Joel Underwood, 92, of Tolar, Texas, left this earth in the early morning, July 28, 2022.

Funeral services for Billy will be at 10:00 AM Monday, August 1st at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Glenn Newberry officiating.  Burial will follow at Tolar Cemetery in Tolar, Texas.  Visitation with the Underwood family will be 4 PM to 6 PM, Sunday, July 31st at Stephenville Funeral Home.

Billy was an only child born November 15, 1929 to V.A. and Gladys Pauline Rose Underwood in Knox City, TX.  He grew up in Dublin, TX, and was a member of the Church of Christ. After graduating from Dublin High School in 1946, Billy went on to receive a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education by attending Tarleton University, Abilene Christian College, and Texas A&M University at College Station. In the Military Core of Cadets at Texas A&M, he earned his commission to Lieutenant. Afterward, he spent two years as a Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean War.

In 1956, he met Margie Ellen Chisolm, and they wed in 1958. They went on to have three sons, Bill Jr., Jim, and Dirk.

After graduating from college, Billy spent over three decades working in the Texas Public Education system as a High School Principal. He started off teaching and coaching at Tolar High School. He’s been a teacher of many different subjects, such as physics, chemistry, & government. He then moved to Ackerly, Texas where he was a high school principal and chemistry teacher. He moved on to three other school districts as High School Principal at O’Donnell High School, Childress High School, and Joshua High School. 

After retiring in 1992, Billy spent his time with Margie tending to his farm caring for his cats, cattle, horses, and chickens. He also loved to spoil his grandchildren as well as his cats. He loved listening and watching Texas Aggies sports on the radio or tv, but only when the Aggies were winning. His favorite thing to talk about was school, and his memories of his students as a high school principal and teacher.

Billy is survived by his wife, Margie; his three children, Bill Underwood, Jr. and wife Kim of Childress, TX;  Jim Underwood and wife Tracy of Burleson, TX, and Dirk Underwood and wife Amy of Tolar, TX;  his grandchildren- Kurt & wife Shasta Underwood, Kallie Underwood, Ty Underwood, Nikki Mireles & husband Colton, Cade Underwood, Caileigh Underwood, Kammie Galligan & husband John, Kacey McKeever, Madalyn Shaw and Riley Shaw, and 9 great-grandchildren.
