Stephenville beats Wylie Friday in Abilene, 56-49

The #1 in Class 4A, Division I Stephenville Yellow Jackets (4-0) defeated the Wylie Bulldogs (2-2) Friday in Abilene, 56-49, behind the arm of sophomore #20 Ryan Gafford last week. 

Gafford was 14 of 18 for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns. He hit sophomore #12 Tristian Gentry 5 times for 131 and and touchdown, senior #10 Payton Poston 5 times for 124 yards and a touchdown, senior #18 Topher Foster for 25 yards and a TD and junior #17 Tate Maruska 3 times for 10 yards. 

On the ground, Maruska carried the ball 23 times for 284 yards and 5 more TDs, while Gafford carried it 8 times for 49 yards.

On defense, the Jackets were a force. Senior #3 Kyler Eudy had 14 assists and 4 solo tackles, junior #42 Rowdy Markland had a sack of the Bulldogs’ quarterback, 9 assists and 6 solo tackles, senior #9 Taylor Bennett had a sack, 9 assists and 5 solo tackles, senior #27 Jack Barkley had 7 assists and 4 solo tackles, while a host of other Yellow Jackets piled on the hits as well. And junior #24 Austin Jergins got an interception and senior Malachi Arredondo recovered a fumble.  

Stephenville is ranked #1 by Texas Football. China Spring (4-0), which is also in District 5-4A, Division I is ranked #2 and the Brownwood Lions (3-1) are ranked #10 after defeating the Glen Rose Tigers (3-1), 17-3, on Friday. This year Brownwood is in District 2-4A, Division I and Glen Rose is in District 2-4A, Division II.

This week is Homecoming for Stephenville HS and the Yellow Jackets will be hosting the Wichita Falls Rider Raiders (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, at the Tarleton State Memorial Stadium in Stephenville.
