Donovan Banks played a major role in Tarleton’s win at Southern Utah, and the Western Athletic Conference took notice, announcing Monday he is the WAC Defensive Player of the Week.

In Tarleton’s 42-40 win at Southern Utah on Saturday, Banks had a fourth quarter 41-yard interception return for a touchdown that ended up being the difference in the game. He also had three tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.

Banks’ interception was his first of the season, his first since picking off the New Mexico State Aggies twice in El Paso on Feb. 21, 2021. His touchdown was his first score of his career – it was Tarleton’s lone points of the fourth quarter, needed to hold off Southern Utah’s comeback attempt in the Texans’ two-point win.

This is Banks’ first career weekly award, and for the Tarleton Football program this season, their fourth. Adrian Guzman has won two WAC weekly awards this year, and Beau Allen has earned one.

Tarleton is 4-1 overall, 1-0 in conference play.

Also announced Monday, Abilene Christian’s Jermiah Dobbins and Stephen F. Austin’s Chris Campos were named the WAC Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.

  • Week 4, Offense – Beau Allen at North Alabama
  • Week 4, Special Teams – Adrian Guzman at North Alabama
