George was born in Watseka, Illinois, on February 18, 1947, to Frederich Donald Bolt, and Esther (Baldwin) Bolt. In his younger years, George was an eagle scout and a ranger at Philmont Scout Reservation. Scouting continued to be an important part of his life for many years and many local Scouts will likely remember him.
George served honorably in the Vietnam War and was a heavily decorated combat medic. Following his service, “Doc” remained very active in veterans organizations for the remainder of his life. George put together the purchasing of DAV vans to take veterans to VA appointments and spent enough hours driving local veterans that he received a presidential commendation for his service. He also aided other veterans with PTSD support counseling through the local VFW and actively worked to help local veterans apply for and receive benefits. George was also active in the DAV and American Legion.
George also had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and could be seen around town on a number of his bikes. He was a proud member of the VFW motorcycle group, a charter member of the DAV motorcycle group, BACA and ABATE. George participated in Operation Rolling Thunder and Ride to the Wall for many years. George also volunteered for many years as Biker Santa delivering toys to children.
Professionally, George was a research engineer by trade. George worked at Fibergrate and Brown & Root, among others, and was responsible for a number of industrial inventions and developments. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and spent lent repainting the meditative labyrinth on his hands and knees. George was also a proud 32nd degree Master Mason. He volunteered with By Gone Days at the Historical House Museum for many years as Coyote George, where he was shot only once. Otherwise George was a larger than life local character beloved by most.
George is survived by his children, Corbett and Michele Leatherwood of Washington D.C.; Nikki Bolt of Stephenville, Texas; Jeremiah and Jennifer Bolt of Tolar, Texas; Tasha Baldwin Smith of Stephenville, Texas; and Katy Thompson of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Hayley, Kyley, Alex, Haley, Aliyah, Alexa, Preston, Quentin, Robbie, Sierra, Katherine Inez, Niycole, Sean, and his great grandchild Isabella.
