SAN ANTONIO – Following a Kooper Shook solo home run to knot the game up at three in the top of the fourth, the Texans looked to be in good shape in game two of the opening weekend series at Roadrunner Field with UTSA.
The Roadrunners (2-0) went on to score nine runs across the following two innings to eliminate the Texan (0-2) threat and take the win, 13-6, to earn the series victory.
Texan starting pitcher Dylan Delvecchio (L, 0-1) pitched 4.2 innings, but it was not until the bottom of the fifth when the Roadrunners were able to take an extended lead and push Delvecchio out of the game.
He allowed a two-run home run off the bat of Matt King and left the game with a runner on third, UTSA leading 5-3. His final line read 4.2 innings pitched with six runs allowed on eight hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Grant Garza came out of the pen for Tarleton and a passed ball got through to score the runner at third to make it 6-3 UTSA. They followed the fifth inning up with six runs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 12-3. Garza allowed three runs on two hits as he pitched into the sixth, ultimately making way for Ryan Jacobs who allowed three runs on four hits to pair with a strikeout.
Tarleton struck in the top of the first as Jake Escalon ripped a two-run double down the right field line to score Mason Hammonds and Cole Miears. UTSA responded in the bottom half, plating a run off a Garrett Poston RBI single to right field to make it 2-1. UTSA grabbed its first lead in the second inning when Shane Sirdashney hit a two-run single to left field.
The Texans saw a run score in the seventh as Jack Wagner hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Jordan Andrade who previously doubled to left-center field, making it 12-4.
Mason Crews hit the second home run of the game for Tarleton in the eighth, taking one over the left-center field wall to score Tyson Drake and make the score 13-6. Drake pinch ran for Shook after he singled earlier in the inning for his second hit of the game, a team-high.
Two freshmen made their first collegiate appearances for Tarleton in Dominic Corgiat and Reece Elston. Corgiat entered in the seventh with one out and induced a fly out to center field and struck out the next batter he saw to get out of the inning not allowing a hit. Elston pitched a scoreless, hitless eighth inning, striking out one.
Daniel Garza (W, 1-0) earned the win for the Roadrunners, pitching 4.0 innings of relief allowing two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking none.
Tarleton will look to salvage the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on CUSA.TV. Hunter Day will get the nod as the starting pitcher for Tarleton.
