ERATH COUNTY — An Erath County couple is without a home following a fire over the weekend. According to Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Joe Brown, while everyone made it out of the home safely, the house itself and the contents were a total loss.
Just before 6 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, Erath County VFR, Hico VFD, Selden VFD and Stephenville FD were dispatched to reports of a structure fire on CR 187 in Erath County. Erath County EMS, Erath County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were quickly on scene and reported all of the home’s occupants had made it out safely.
According to radio reports at the time of the fire, heavy smoke and fire was seen coming from the roof of the home and another report indicated a power line was down. The power company was called and the line disconnected.
Brown said firefighters cleared the scene at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening and Erath County Fire Marshal Tommy Shelton was contacted to investigate the cause of the blaze. He was on scene investigating on Sunday morning and as
Firefighters on scene worked quickly but were unable to save the structure and it was declared a total loss. As of Monday afternoon, Shelton had not concluded his investigation and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
According to Selden VFD officials, the community gathered around the family Saturday night and they had a place to stay while they figured everything out.
