STEPHENVILLE —Duo Mundi George and Guli — George Lopez and Gulimina Mahamuti — will perform in a two-piano concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium hosted by the Tarleton State University Department of Fine Arts. Admission is free.
Since 2018 the pianists have thrilled U.S. audiences with an innovative and diverse programming style that engages both the eye and the ear. They have been lauded as “breathing the same artistic air” with an intimacy of communication appealing to audiences of every generation.
The pair gave a standing room only performance of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story at their debut concert in Bowdoin College’s Studzinski Hall and recently performed on tour in Ohio for the Western Reserve MTA in Columbus and at the University of Akron. Their upcoming schedule features concerts in Boston, Kansas, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Mexico and Portugal.
Lopez, the Bowdoin College Robert Beckwith Artist in Residence, has been a performer and educator for 30 years. Known in Europe, South America and the U.S. for “kaleidoscopic colors and clarity of conception” in the standard repertoire and for championing new works, he is comfortable with music ranging from jazz and ragtime to contemporary improvisation.
He initiated the Music in the Museum series at Bowdoin College, and under his leadership, the all-student Bowdoin College Orchestra performs full symphonic programs each semester.
Mahamuti, the first Uyghur from China to receive a doctorate of musical arts in piano performance in the U.S., debuted major works at Carnegie Hall and has performed internationally in Montreal, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Budapest and across the U.S. and China. She performed piano concerti with the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and Harbin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and was featured on the radio in San Francisco, Queens College/CUNY podcast, China Touch Radio and Istanbul Technical University Radio.
She is a former part-time Assistant Professor at Ohio Wesleyan University and previously taught at Capital University and was on faculty at the School of Music of the Northwest University for Nationalities in China.
