Texan Soccer continues spring work after 2 impressive wins

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton soccer has stayed busy this spring following its debut season in 2022.

The Texans are in the midst of a schedule that includes five spring games, all in preparation for the fall 2023 season.

The spring slate was kicked off with an impact win over Conference USA foe UTEP at Lubbock Christian’s Soccer Field on Feb. 26. The Texans played stout defense and added two goals to defeat the Miners 2-0.

Sophomore Aurora, Colorado, native Avery Harr struck first in the game. She scored on a cross assist from sophomore midfielder Jaycie Bass putting Tarleton ahead 1-0. The Texans delivered again with Harr being involved for a second time. Senior forward Nicole Fels scored on a cross assist from Harr to make it 2-0, a lead the Texans held for the remainder of the game.

The second match of the spring came on March 4 at the Tarleton Soccer Complex. Tarleton took on a formidable foe in Division 2 St. Mary’s. The Rattlers finished 12-5-4 last season and advanced to the NCAA D2 Soccer Tournament. The Texans poured in four goals on the way to a 4-0 shutout victory, their second of the spring season.

Goal one came from junior midfielder Adriana Alonso-Gomez on an assist from sophomore Rylee Low. The Texans second goal was scored by sophomore defender Kaitlyn Flanagan off a corner kick from Bass. Nicole Fels recorded her second goal of the spring season to make it 3-0 on an assist from Alonso-Gomez. The final goal of the game from Bass as she put it in the back of the net off a corner kick assist from Alonso-Gomez. Alonso-Gomez scored a goal and had two assists in the game.

Tarleton has three remaining games in the spring, with two of them being played in Stephenville and one on the road.

The next game comes April 1 as the Texans will host Midwestern State in Stephenville with a 7 p.m. start.

The lone road game remaining is April 15 as Tarleton will travel to Ruston, Louisiana, for a tilt with C-USA’s Louisiana Tech.

Tarleton will conclude the spring schedule with a home match vs. Angelo State on April 22, with a 1 p.m. start. The Rams concluded the 2022 season with a 13-4-3 record and advanced to the NCAA Division 2 Soccer Tournament.
