STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State women’s soccer team powered past Texas A&M-Commerce for a 2-0 victory on a hot Sunday afternoon at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Texans (1-0-1) remain unbeaten thus far in the 2023 campaign. The Lions (0-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season courtesy of Tarleton State.
Sydney Rouillard scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute off a corner kick from Adriana Alonso-Gomez via a header from Avery Harr, both of whom were credited with assists.
Jenaya Brown notched her first goal knocking in a deflection off a goalkeeper save in the 57th minute.
For the second straight game, Mikayla Kendall was very impressive in between the posts with four saves and recorded her first shutout of the young season.
After a quiet first 20 minutes of action with the Lions tallying the only shot on goal, the Texans broke through to give Tarleton the lead. The Texans got on the board at nearly the same against the Lions as in the previous match against the Warhawks.
In the 25th minute, Alonso-Gomez took a corner kick from the top left of the goal. After a header from Harr, Rouillard was able to fire a strike off the pass into the middle of the goal just above the goalkeeper to give the Texans a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Tarleton State held TAMUC to just one shot in goal. Tarleton added an insurance goal in the 57th minute of play. After Harr fired a shot that deflected off the goal to the top of the box, Brown was there to put it in the back of the net for the Texans’ second goal of the afternoon.
Trailing 2-0, a Lions assistant coach was issued a yellow card, taking the wind out the team’s sails as the Texans coasted to the 2-0 victory.
Tarleton led Texas A&M-Commerce in all statistical categories. The Texas held a 12-10 advantage in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal, 4-3 in saves and 11-2 in corner kicks.
Tarleton State will enjoy a four-day break before playing a pair of games next weekend. The Texans will host Nicholls on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Tarleton Soccer Complex, before heading to Houston on Sunday for its first road match of the year. The first 100 fans to Friday night’s match will receive a purple vuvuzuela to use during the contest on Rootin’ Tootin’ Texan Night. Sunday’s match against the Cougars in Houston is set for 1 p.m.
