Big nights from Brown and Bass leads Tarleton State to win against Nicholls

STEPHENVILLE – Jenaya Brown’s team-leading second goal of the season and Jaycie Bass’ first career collegiate goal powered Tarleton State Women’s Soccer to its second consecutive win of the season on Friday night against Nicholls at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.

Tarleton State picked up its second win in as many seasons against Nicholls (0-3-0) and won their second consecutive game of the 2023 season, improving to 2-0-1 on the year.

Brown notched her first three-point game of her career tallying a goal and an assist.

Bass corralled a loose ball and notched her first career collegiate goal.

Nicole Fels found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 51st minute of action.

Reigning WAC Goalkeeper of the Week, Mikayla Kendall, notched three saves and combined with Emma Barnes for her second shutout of the season. Barnes played between the posts for the entirety of the second half and notched her first collegiate save.

Fels started the scoring for the Texans in the first half. In the 18th minute, Rylee Low kicked a free kick from mid-field. Adriana Alonso-Gomez executed a perfect one-touch pass to Brown who flicked it ahead to Fels who beat the entire Nicholls defense. Fels took the open goal opportunity and hammered home her first goal of the season.

In the final minutes of the first half, Nicholls was granted an opportunity to tie the match at one. A foul in the box gave the Colonels a penalty kick and Allie Jones was called upon to take it. With just three minutes until the half, Jones was unable to convert on the kick as Kendall came up with the impressive save in the bottom left of the net preserving the 1-0 Texan lead into the half.

Just six minutes into the second half, Tarleton State struck again. After back-to-back shots by Kaitlyn Flanagan and Jada Kamerman, the Texans faced a corner kick. Brown was the chosen one and settled in the top right corner in the 51st minute. She bent the ball into the back of the net after a deflection from a Colonels’ defender to give the Texans a 2-0 lead.

In the 86th minute, for the third time this season, an Alonso-Gomez corner kick led to a goal. Her kick was placed in the middle of the box where Bass corralled it and tapped it in for Tarleton’s third goal of the season.

Tarleton State cruised in the last few minutes of the game to take its second win of the season, 3-0.

The Texans led the Colonels in shots, 13-8, corner kicks, 5-1, and saves, 4-3.

Tarleton will be back in action on Sunday morning in Houston at the Carl Lewis Track and Field Soccer Complex at 10:30. The Texans’ will face the BIG 12’s Houston Cougars, Tarleton’s the first Power Five Conference member opponent in program history.
