Tarleton State Volleyball brings home a 3-1 victory over PVAMU Panthers

PRAIRIE VIEW – Tarleton State Volleyball evens the score against Prairie View A&M with a 3-1 win in the Panther’s territory. 

After an early season loss to PVAMU, the Texans came back for the second match of the season against the Panthers looking for redemption which they found after four sets that had viewers on the edge of their seats. 

In set one, a kill from Kylee Owens put PVAMU on the board first. Tarleton State found their way to the board after a service error from the Panthers followed by a kill from Emma Burke that put the Purple and White in the lead. The Texans held on to the lead for the majority of the stanza, but PVAMU followed closely behind. A service error from the Panthers began an eight-point score run that finalized the set for Tarleton State. The Texans closed out the frame with back-to-back kills from Rajini Fitzmaurice and Melina Maldonaldo Ortiz followed by a service ace from Matti Theurer to end the set, 25-16.

The second set saw the Purple and White take the first point with a kill from Burke. Megan Hodges put up the third point for the Texans with a service ace, her 11th of the season. A kill from Nyah Walker tallied the first point for the Panthers, followed by a service error from Tarleton State, making the score 3-2. The Texans quickly got back to work after three consecutive kills from Burke, Breanna McDonough and Allison Bryant. Tarleton State took off, leaving the Panthers trailing for the remainder of the stanza. Three kills from Bryant accompanied by a service error from PVAMU tallied the final points for the set with Tarleton on top, 25-14.

Burke claimed the first point of the third set for the Texans with another kill. Tarleton State led the set through seven points until a kill from Owens put the Panthers in the lead. From there, the battle went back and forth as a service ace from Maldonaldo Ortiz tied the set 13-13. An attack error from the Texans put PVAMU ahead until a kill from Schirpik retied the set. Each team took turns compiling kill after kill until a service ace from Fitzmaurice led to a timeout called by Prairie View with the score 19-20. The Panthers returned from the break with a kill from Kiersten Atkinson followed by a service error from PVAMU to add a point for Tarleton State. A kill from Bryant tallied point 22 on the board for the Texans but the Panthers responded with a kill from Janyah Henderson to add their 24th point of the set. A kill from Schirpik put up the 23rd point for Tarleton State but a kill from Owens took the set leaving PVAMU on top 25-23.

The fourth and final frame saw a service error from the Texans lead the Panthers to the board first. Fitzmaurice quickly replied with a kill to put up a point for Tarleton State. PVAMU’s Bailee Hewitt laid down a kill to tally the second point for the Panthers but a kill from McDonough and an attack error from Prairie View put the Texans in the lead 3-2. An error from the Texans tied the set but a kill from Bryant saw Tarleton State retake the lead. Hewitt put down another kill to retie the stanza and an error from the Purple and White put PVAMU in the lead. In a back and forth set, both teams shared the lead throughout the duration of the frame. As Tarleton State sat 16-19, two errors from the Panthers and a kill from Burke tied the game for the Texans. Theurer tallied her second service ace of the match to put up point 20 for the Purple and White but two kills from the Panthers put them back in the lead. Schirpik responded with a kill of her own to tie the game but a service error from the Texans made PVAMU first to the 22nd point. A service ace from Prairie View left the score 23-21 with the Panthers in the lead. Two attack errors from PVAMU tied the set at 23-23. Bryant put down another kill, but Walker responded with a kill of her own. Burke tallied point 25 for the Texans making the score 25-24. McDonough sealed the deal for Tarleton State with a kill that put up the match point for the Purple and White. 

The Texans compiled 55 kills and 56 digs for the match. Tarleton State saw seven aces against PVAMU. 

Bryant leads the team with 17 kills on the match. Fitzmaurice compiled 11 kills and Burke had nine of her own. Maldonaldo Ortiz and Theurer tied for most aces on the match with two each and Fitzmaurice sits next in line with a solo ace for the match. 

Schirpik and Burke tied with four solo blocks on the match followed by Bryant with a solo block of her own. Hodges leads the team in assists with 23 for the match and Maldonaldo Ortiz compiled 15 assists. Theurer led the team with 20 digs on the night while Fitzmaurice sits in second with nine and Isabel Gonzaba saw six. 

Tarleton State will be back in action at home September 15 and 16 as the Texans host the Dr. Pam Littleton Classic for their final pre-conference tournament.
