STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University professor Dr. Alex del Carmen has been named a Regents Professor for 2023-24, one of 18 honored by The Texas A&M System Board of Regents for exemplary performance.
“I am truly honored to be named a Texas A&M System Regents Professor and accept this award with profound humility and appreciation for its historical significance,” said Dr. del Carmen, Director of the Institute for Predictive Analytics in Criminal Justice (IPAC) — A Texas A&M System Initiative.
The regents established the award in 1996 to recognize faculty who have made extraordinary contributions to their university and to the people of Texas.
The selection process begins with a call for nominations from the chancellor. Final nominations advance to the chief executive officer of each A&M entity and are then subject to a system-level review by academic vice chancellors and past recipients. The chancellor and the board have final say.
“Dr. Alex del Carmen has earned the title of Regents Professor over the course of his ten years serving the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA), Tarleton, and the broader North Texas community,” said Dr. Emran El-Badawi, Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. “His record already boasts a number of leadership roles and honors. As a public-facing scholar, he has contributed prolifically to the media, national conferences and consultations with judicial and law enforcement agencies. I offer warmest congratulations and heartfelt thanks for his exemplary service to COLFA, Tarleton, and our community.”
Dr. George Eichenberg, Professor and Interim Criminal Justice Department Head, described Dr. del Carmen’s contributions to the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Public Administration at Tarleton State as phenomenal.
“Through thorough planning, team building and personal example, he developed a program that was doing well into a unit that is the flagship program of Tarleton State and the envy of numerous universities,” said Dr Eichenberg.
“Program growth has been quite impressive in terms of enrollment, student retention, faculty development, and programming, including the development and institution of the Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, a Ph.D. program founded on the idea of actively seeking to enroll students from the career field who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to pursue a terminal degree.”
Dr. del Carmen led the introduction of the first Ph.D. program in Tarleton State’s 125-year history and served as a major professor to its first Ph.D. graduate last summer. His contributions to the law enforcement profession have been quoted in thousands of media outlets including the New York Times, CNN, FOX News, NPR and the Associated Press. He was named a Fulbright Specialist by the U.S. State Department, and his book, “Racial Profiling in Policing: Beyond the Basics” (2023, Kendall Hunt Publishing), has been quoted in a 1st Circuit Court of Appeals Opinion in a law enforcement federal consent decree case.
He was recently awarded a fellowship by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo.
