STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Women’s Basketball senior guard Jakoriah Long was listed on the NCAA’s Starting 5 for top performances from last week.
Long, the WAC Player of the Week, received the weekly recognition after scoring 25 points in back-to-back games to help Tarleton State to wins over Seattle U and Utah Valley. The weekly honor recognizes the top five performances in all Division I women’s basketball.
Leading Tarleton State to its fifth consecutive win following Saturday’s victory at Wisdom Gym, Long combined for 13 3-pointers in the Texans’ last two games. She shot 59.1% from 3-point range last week and shot 53.6% from the floor overall.
The senior guard set a new Division I Era single game program record with seven made 3-pointers in Thursday’s game against Seattle U, scoring a season-high 25 points in the process. Long had an encore performance on Saturday against Utah Valley, hitting six 3-pointers and scoring 25 points to lead the Texans to a come-from-behind win over the Wolverines.
Long is the first Texan in the Division I Era to post two consecutive 25-point games. She is the first Texan since the 2013-14 season to post back-to-back games with at least 25 points (Kiara Wright, Feb. 5-8, 2014).
She also became the first Texan in the Division I Era to have back-to-back games with six or more 3-pointers. She is the first Texan since the 2011-12 season to have two consecutive games with six or more 3-pointers (Peyton Adamson, Jan. 11-14, 2012).
Scoring 21 points at Southern Utah on Feb. 1, Long has now posted three straight games with at least 20 points. She is the first Texan since the 2022-23 season to have three consecutive 20-point games (Teresa Da Silva, Nov. 22-Dec. 6, 2022).
Leading Tarleton State in scoring with 348 points and 11.2 points per game last season, Long finished in the top 20 in the WAC in scoring. She scored in double figures 18 times and had two games with at least 20 points, including a 20-point performance in the WAC Tournament against ACU on March 13.
Prior to her arrival in Stephenville, Long was an NJCAA honorable mention guard at Blinn College. The two-time NJCAA national tournament guard started all of Blinn College’s 35 games in which the Buccaneers went 31-4 overall and 15-1 in conference play. Long led the Buccaneers to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships as the No. 5 seed in 2022-23.
With Long’s help, Tarleton State has its first five-game win streak in the Division I Era and the longest win streak since the 2019-20 season. Tarleton State posted its 11th win at Wisdom Gym this season after Saturday’s victory, its most wins at home in the Division I Era.
Long and Tarleton State go on the road this week, starting with the Grand Canyon on Thursday at 7 p.m. GCU is currently in first place in the WAC standings and received votes in the top 25 national poll.
