Tarleton State 4 Memphis 2
Shelby Schultz earned her seventh start of the season and she continued to sit batters down as she struck out six and earned her fourth win of her career.
The first inning was quiet for both teams before Tarleton State made some noise in the top of the second and never looked back. JJ Duke launched her second long ball of her freshman campaign down the left field line, a solo shot to give the Texans the early 1-0 lead.
The Purple and White kept the Tigers at bay once again in the second before the Texans increased the lead in the top of the third.
Tristyn Trull, the shortstop from Decatur, Texas led off the top of the third and didn’t wait long to make an impact. Trull hit a no-doubter to dead center putting Tarleton State up 2-0 early on.
Once more the Tigers were held scoreless before the Purple and White added yet more runs to the then shutout.
In the top of the fourth with bases loaded, Trull once again was the hero hitting a single to left center scoring Austin Germain and Bella Hernandez and moving Haley Hughes to third to push it to a four-run lead 4-0.
Just like the first inning, the fifth was no different as both teams held each other scoreless before the Tigers finally cracked through and scored one in the bottom of the sixth. Neely Taylor singled to right field as Zoe Adebayo advanced to third and then scored on an error cutting the Texans lead to three making it 4-1.
With just three outs to go to secure their 12th win of the season, the Texans entered the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers were going to do anything but lay down. After a fly out and strikeout of the first two Tigers, Adebayo took the Purple and White deep left center to cut Tarleton State’s original four-run lead in half, 4-2.
Just an out away, Taylor lined out to Trull and that was the ball game as the Texans secured their 12th win of the season to hold sole place of the second-best record in the WAC behind Grand Canyon (12-3).
For the Texans, head coach Mark Cumpian used a trio of arms in the Purple and White’s first action of the Best on the Bayou.
