Texans sweep Wayland Baptist, drop other 3 competitive matches on weekend in Kingsville

KINGSVILLE – The Texans competed across all four of their matches at the Javelina Beach Showdown in Kingsville this weekend, but dropped three of them to even their record on the year 4-4.

Tarleton State swept Wayland Baptist 5-0 for the second time this season on Friday, falling 4-1 against UTEP, 3-2 to Colorado Mesa and 4-1 to Texas A&M-Kingsville, also for the second time this season.

The Texans debuted three new pairings on Courts 2-4 this weekend, moving up Amaya Brown to play with Grayson Schirpik at No. 2, placing Bella Parayno with Christian Mitchell on Court 3, and inserting Sofia Bendele into the lineup on Court 4 with Hayden Huber. Court 1’s pairing remained at Emma Halcomb and Allison Bryant, and Court 5’s stayed at Charlize Ching with Olivia Fuentes.

Ching and Fuentes won their first three matches to improve to 7-0 on the season before suffering their first blip in the final match of the weekend. The duo opened the Javelina Beach Showdown with a 21-17 17-21 21-19 win against UTEP’s Averie Threet and Katie Call, then beat Wayland Baptist’s Jordan Schlageter and Luiza Valentim 21-18 21-18, before defeating Colorado Mesa’s Lucy Kaufman and Izzy Burns 21-19 21-19. Ching and Fuentes suffered their first defeat of the year against Texas A&M Kingsville’s Clara Presmanes-Garate and Elizabeth Williams 17-21 22-20 12-15. Ching and Fuentes are now 7-1 on the year.

Tarleton’s pairs on Court 1 and Court 3 both went 2-2 on the weekend. Bryant and Halcomb are now 5-3 on the season with two wins against Wayland Baptist’s Emily Buchberger and Selma Sutaj 21-11 21-14 and Kingsville’s Liana Huesca and Rylan Pollard 21-12 21-15, with two losses against UTEP’s Krista Paegle and Paulina Acuna 15-21 15-21, and Colorado Mesa’s Gracyn Spresser and Ellie Ask 19-21 15-21. On Court 3, Parayno and Mitchell earned two wins against Wayland Baptist’s Frida Espeseth and Deniz Yileri 21-15 22-20 and Colorado Mesa’s Barett Nolan and Ania Swartzendruber 21-17 22-20, falling twice to UTEP’s Mila Popovic and Marian Ovalle 15-21 14-21, and Kingsville’s Laura Betsa and Taylor McCarthy 12-21 17-21.

On Court 2, Brown and Schirpik earned their victory against Wayland Baptist’s Carlee Heidebrecht and Martyna Lewinska 21-18 21-19. They lost to UTEP’s Madison Hill and Ema Uskokovic 17-21 19-21, CMU’s Riley Daugherty and Lizzy Hood 17-21 15-21, and Kingsville’s Laura Betsa and Taylor McCarthy 12-21 17-21.

On Court 4, Huber and Bendele also posted their win against Wayland Baptist, winning 19-21 21-19 15-12 over Henry-Souquet-Bress and Averi Penner. Huber and Bendele lost to UTEP’s Lauren Perry and Emma Schubert 18-21 11-21, CMU’s Taylor Scherff and Jessica Passi 19-21 16-21, and Kingsville’s Emma Daughtery and Meghan Stiefer 22-24, 21-14 13-15.

After two weekends, Tarleton State has doubled its win total from the entirety of last season. The Texans will head to their first location outside of Kingsville in match play for four in Long Beach, California, at the LBSU Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, on March 15-16.
