STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State outstanding track and field athlete Victoria Cameron added 2025 WAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year to her impressive rookie indoor season resumé, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon.

Cameron becomes the first Tarleton State Texan female track and field athlete to win any indoor or outdoor postseason honor. She joins former Texan Justin Raines as the only other Texan to earn the indoor freshman of the year, which he accomplished in 2022. The redshirt-freshman earned a pair of WAC Player of the Week honors during the regular season.

“I am so proud of Victoria Cameron,” said first-year head coach Bobby Carter. “Not only is she an outstanding athlete but a great person, and a great leader. Coach T,  has done a phenomenal job with her and she has trusted the process from the beginning. She’s a very hard worker and we are excited for what’s in store next!”

Last week, Cameron took home the title of WAC Champion in the 60-meter dash. She posted the fastest time in prelims, 7.26, her slowest race of the year and still had the best qualifying time by almost 0.2 seconds. In the finals, Cameron took the crown in 7.21 seconds, setting a new WAC Championships meet record. The freshman blasted past the field, recording the win by 0.13 seconds. She also recorded a silver medal in the women’s 4×400 meter relay in the final race of the conference championships.

Throughout her freshman campaign, Cameron has been making waves across the conference and the nation. In her first collegiate indoor race at Texas Tech, she shattered the school record in the prelims and then broke it again a few hours later in the semifinals in 7.19 seconds. But she wasn’t done yet. Cameron broke her school record two more times two weeks later first in 7.18 seconds and then again shortly after in 7.14 seconds.

Cameron broke the all-time WAC record in her second race of the season in 7.19 seconds. She holds the top six times in the women’s 60 meters in the WAC with six of her eight total races beating the previous record of 7.24 set in 2012. She posted all six of her regular season times 7.25 or under, with five falling under 7.24.

Not only is Cameron fast among those in the conference, but she will be making her first trip to the NCAA Indoor National Championships next week. The Stephenville, Texas, native, at one point held the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season after the first few weeks. Her altitude-corrected time of 7.16 ranks as the eighth-best time this year in the NCAA. She also ranks second in the NCAA among freshman in the 60-meter dash.

Cameron’s impressive season also has her with the 21st fastest time in the world this calendar in the 60. The freshman after her first race of 2025, posted the fifth-fastest time in the world and the second fastest among US-born women.

Tarleton State Track and Field will send four track and field athletes to the NCAA Indoor National Championships for the first time in program history. The NCAA championships will be held on March 14-15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
