STEPHENVILLE (April 18, 2015) — Fans and supporters who waited out the almost two-hour rain and lightning delay were rewarded with two quarters of explosive offense ending with Purple edging White 29-28 in the Tarleton State spring football game at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

There was no shortage of offensive highlights with eight touchdowns over the two-quarter game simulation, complete with scoring on the ground and through the air, a front flip and a sack by two Stephenville High School products a long TD jaunt by a quarter back and a pleased head coach.

Even though he now doubles as the defensive coordinator, head coach Cary Fowler didn’t mind seeing the offensive explosion, and was pleased with both his quarterbacks.

Zed Woerner passed for two touchdowns and rushed for a third score on one of the biggest plays of the night. After a big pass play ended with former Stephenville receiver Alex Sanchez flipping over a defender, Woerner scrambled 45 yards to pay dirt on the next play, tying the game at 14.

Woerner tossed a 25-yard touchdown to a wide open Mitchell Leonard to pull Purple within one, then the first-team quarterback found Bubba Tandy for the game-winning two-point conversion pass with one minute remaining.

Woerner’s other scoring strike was a 59-yard catch-and-run effort by Sanchez, who plays in the slot. He and his counterpart, Cason Fornes of the White, made plays all over the field, as did proven receiver Le’Nard Meyers.
