STEPHENVILLE (April 25, 2015) — Even while rained out until Saturday, Stephenville clinched a playoff spot Friday evening.
The Honeybees are visiting Graham at 7 p.m. Saturday for their District 6-4A softball finale, but already they have their ticket punched to the 4A playoff tournament thanks to Abilene Wylie falling to Mineral Wells Friday.
Mineral Wells sewed up the district championship with the win, finishing the 6-4A season 6-2. Graham (4-3) and Stephenville (3-4) are battling to determine seedings. If Stephenville wins the teams will be tied for second, and Stephenville head coach Rus Mayes says they will determine following the game how to break the tie. That likely means determining rather to hold a one-game seeding playoff or flipping a coin.
If Stephenville loses tonight, it will tie Wylie and Brownwood for spots 3-5.
Because a playoff spot is on the line, with the fifth-place team being left out, a three-team playoff is required, in accordance with district bi-laws. However, head coach Rus Mayes said Stephenville would have a bye in the opening round of the three-team playoff, because the Honeybees are 3-1 in games between the three teams and Wylie and Brownwood are each 2-2.
The loser of the Wylie-Brownwood game would be eliminated, with the winner playing Stephenville to determine seeds three and four from the district.
Regardless the outcome between Stephenville and Graham, Abilene Wylie and Brownwood still must have a one-game playoff to determine the league’s fourth playoff representative.
Here are the scenarios:
*1. Mineral Wells (6-2; complete) – Secured outright championship
*2. Graham (4-3, vs. Stephenville) – 2nd with win; Tie for 2nd with a loss
*3. Stephenville (3-4, at Graham) – Tie for 2nd with win; Bye in 3-team playoff for spots 3-5 with loss
T4. Abilene Wylie (3-5, complete) – Head’s-up playoff for 4th with Stephenville win; 3-team playoff for 3rd, 4th, 5th with Stephenville loss.
T4. Brownwood (3-5, complete) – Head’s-up playoff for 4th with Stephenville win; 3-team playoff for 3rd, 4th, 5th with Stephenville loss.
