(March 13, 2015) — Stephenville took the lead for good with a four-run top of the third and never looked back in a 9-5 win over 5A Abilene Cooper to begin play in the Snyder softball tournament Thursday. The Honeybees also shutout fellow 4A member Perryton 8-0.
The Honeybees (9-3) played error-free defense behind freshman pitcher Julia Flores and scored five unearned runs off four Cooper errors.
Emily Miller had a home run to spearhead the offensive attack. She was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Nadine Arredondo was 2-for-2 with a double four RBIs and three runs scored. The remainder of Stephenville’s six hits were provided by Kali Smith, who scored two runs, and Sierra Varnado. Smith, Flores and Sami Shaffer each drew walks.
Flores pitched all five innings and struck out eight. All Cooper’s runs were earned off seven hits, four for extra bases.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
