TexAnns bounce back with pair of Saturday sweeps

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 12, 2015) – Tarleton Volleyball got back to their winning ways with a pair of 3-0 wins over Western State and Colorado State-Pueblo on the second day of the Steel & Silver Classic Saturday.

Game 1: Tarleton 3, Western State 0

Hailey Roberts had the first three Tarleton points of the first set as the TexAnns and Western State went back and forth through the first 26 points. Back-to-back kills by Meg Umbel and Roberts’ service ace gave Tarleton its biggest lead of the opening set at 20-16.

Western State battled back to force a tie at 22, but the TexAnns pushed through with Kenya Alexander powering kills on two of the final three points including the game winner to take the first set 25-23.

The opening set was the closest set of the match featuring 11 ties and five lead changes. The final two sets combined for only six tied and two lead changes.

Tarleton went on a 5-1 run and a 5-2 run to open the second set that led to their biggest lead at 10-4.

Western State was able to tie the set at 21 before Tarleton closed with a 4-1 run to win the second set 25-22.

Western State controlled the early stages of the third set, taking an 8-5 lead before Tarleton went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The TexAnns padded their lead to 21-14 and eventually won the match 25-19 capped off by Roberts’ 19th kill of the game.

Umbel had nine kills, Kenya Alexander had eight, and Xzache Mathis added six for Tarleton.

Chandler Gow provided 40 assists. Roberts also led with a dozen digs followed by Ayssa Garcia with nine. Rebecca Schlorff and Garcia each had two service aces.

Game 2: Tarleton 3, Colorado State-Pueblo 0
Tarleton closed out the Steel & Silver Classic with a three-set sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo on their home court.

Both teams split the first 20 points of the opening set before began to pull away with a 20-16 lead. CS-P ended up taking a 24-25 lead but Kelsey Raglin‘s kill tied the score at 25.

Xzache Mathis had two of the set’s final three kills to give the TexAnns a 28-26 win.

Tarleton led 5-1 to open the second set with Hailey Roberts delivering three kills to start.

CS-P took a 14-17 lead for their biggest advantage of the second set when Tarleton went on a 5-1 run with kills from Raglin and Roberts.

Mathis had the final two kills of the second set to win 25-21 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Roberts had kills on five straight possessions to give Tarleton a 15-11 lead.

Raglin’s kill pushed the score to 18-12 and the TexAnns were in complete control.

Roberts put herself in the TexAnn history book with kills on the final two points that ultimately gave Tarleton a 25-21 set win and a 3-0 sweep.

Roberts’ 31 kills gave her three 30-kill games in her career, tying her with Jelena Miljanic for the most 30-kill games in program history. Roberts finished with a .490 hitting percentage in the game.

Chandler Gow‘s 49 assists helped pave the way for Roberts along with Kenya Alexander‘s nine kills and Mathis’ eight.

Ayssa Garcia led the TexAnns with 23 digs—one short of her career high—and Roberts added 16 digs of her own. Raglin had six kills and seven digs while Adrianna Knutson had eight digs.

Tarleton, who moved to 7-2 on the season, will face Texas Wesleyan on Monday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Wisdom Volleyball Gym.
