(October 10, 2015) — Hico started fast with a blocked punt for a touchdown, then poured it on in a 33-7 win over De Leon in a 7-2A Division I district opener at Tiger Stadium Friday.
Jacob Smith drove back the De Leon up back, and the punt hit the up back, went straight up and was recovered in the end zone by Jacob Crouch.
It was just the quick start Hico needed after suffering injuries and facing a brutal pre-district schedule.
The first win is right on time for the Tigers, who continue district play with a tough road test next week at Tolar.
Cooper Conlee, a Stephenville move in, has made a smooth transition from junior varsity to varsity for the Tigers, and was a force Friday with two touchdown catches and a big gain on a jet sweep to the De Leon 2-yard line to set up another score.
Standout running back Blake Hyles continues to improve at quarterback, where he’s playing because starter Parker Wood was lost during pre-district to a torn ACL.
“Blake is getting more comfortable at quarterback, and we’ve settled back into a double-tight wing-T that we used to run because it seems to be what fits us,” said Wood. “But Conlee gives us another dimension because he definitely has the ability run out there and make big catches.”
Gillermo Zuniga led the Hico defensive effort with four sacks.
