A head-on collision between an 18-wheeler and cattle truck led to a fire that caused a small explosion at the intersection near Cole’s General Store and sent the cattle truck careening through the sign and some of the covered parking at Sonic Restaurant along State Highway 6 in Hico Thursday morning.
A local nurse – who asked to remain anonymous – helped the driver of the truck out of his cab and to safety before the rig exploded.
The driver of the other truck was taken by air ambulance to a Fort Worth hospital while the driver of the cattle truck refused transportation by a local ambulance.
The accident happened close to 7 a.m. Thursday and as of 8 a.m. volunteer fire crews from Hamilton County, Hico, Erath County and Carlton were working the scene, diverting traffic as city crews contained an oil leak from the cattle truck to keep it from downed power lines across the street.
Hamilton County EMS and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office were also working the scene.
