STEPHENVILLE (January 12, 2016) — Stephenville fell behind one final time in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter then used a 10-2 run to move ahead of good in a 52-43 victory over Fort Worth Lake Country Christian at Gandy Gym Tuesday.
It was a one-game break from 6-4A play for the Honeybees (8-13), who return to district play at Mineral Wells on Friday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
The run began with a Jaycee Morton free throw to tie the game and a Kali Smith 3-pointer for a 41-38 lead. Ebony Green hit a foul shot with five minutes remaining and Bayleigh Chaviers knocked down an aggressive layup 40 seconds later to make it 44-38.
Lake Country did edge closer before Morton hit four straight free throws, extending the lead to 48-40 with 1:35 remaining.
Chaviers led the way for Stephenville with 12 points, while Morton, a freshman had 11 thanks to a 9-12 performance at the line. Smith netted 10, Mikayla Hobbs seven, Skylar Chipman six, Ali Thorpe two, Payton Wall two, Liz Pack one and Ebony Green one.
Stephenville had a brief run in the third quarter, following a LCC bucket for the lead with a 6-1 run for a 29-24 edge over the Lady Eagles midway through the period. Lake Country pulled within 36-35 by the end of the third and took its final lead on a bucket in the opening seconds of the fourth.
The first half was close the whole way with a disparity of tempos and scoring between each quarter. Back and forth they went, trading off field goals early – it was 9-8 LCC after three minutes – and then stops – it was just 15-15 at the end of the quarter and 22-21 Stephenville at intermission.
