STEPHENVILLE (January 25, 2016) — Four internal candidates have expressed interest in the athletic director position at Stephenville ISD, according to superintendent Matt Underwood.
First-year athletic director Alan Haire is leaving Stephenville February 8 to become head football coach in Salado, his hometown. Salado ISD approved hiring Haire in a called board meeting last Wednesday.
“I’ve had some interest from inside the organization, and my goal is to sit down and talk with all those people who have expressed interest in the position before I name an interim,” said Underwood, who added he plans to name the interim at the end of this week. “Ideally, we will have the interim named and in position to spend time working with [Haire] his last week on campus.”

External candidates will also have the opportunity to apply for the position full time.
“Once I name an interim we will wait probably about a month and a half to post post the position,” Underwood said. “I feel like you’re ahead of the curve if you can get a posting out prior to spring break.”
Underwood did not name any of the internal candidates, but did confirm he plans for the athletic director’s position to continue to be separate from head coach positions. Haire is the first athletic director at Stephenville who was not also head football coach. He was hired last March, the same day Greg Winder was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach.
Assistant athletic director and head athletic trainer Mike Carroll served as interim athletic director last year when Joseph Gillespie resigned as athletic director and head football coach to become linebackers coach at Tulsa University.
