HUCKABAY (May 18, 2016) — From the moment Taylor Lowe stepped foot on campus at the University of Texas, she knew Austin was where she wanted to continue her education.

“I’ve always loved UT, and it’s been my dream school since I toured it my junior year,” said Lowe. “I knew right then that if I could get in that’s where I wanted to go.”

As valedictorian of the Huckabay High School, Class of 2016, Lowe isn’t just guaranteed acceptance to UT, but also free tuition her first year.

“I’m just excited because of all the good things that come with being valedictorian, like free tuition for my freshman year and all the good scholarships,” said Lowe, No. 1 of 14 graduating seniors at HHS.

Lowe will major in nursing at UT, combining a passion for helping others with a joy of science.

“I just want to help other people so it feels like the right field,” Lowe said. “Science is my favorite subject, I like science a lot.”

The daughter of Scott and Marcela Lowe, Taylor has no doubt growing up in Huckabay and in HISD will help in her future endeavors.

“I’ve learned a lot, and I’m really close to my classmates. We’re more like brothers and sisters than anything else,” Lowe said. “And growing up playing basketball here has taught me a lot about teamwork and dedication and has added a lot to my school experience.”

Lowe helped the Lady Indians to area championships as a junior and a senior. They reached the ‘Sweet 16’ this spring before falling in the semifinal round of the Region III-A Tournament.

While he coaches boys and not girls, Lowe still pointed to basketball coach and teacher Bryan Blackwell as one of the mentors who have had a big impact on her life.

“He hasn’t really been my coach, but he’s always been there for me,” she said. “We talk about different things and he helps me through any issues I have. He’s probably made the biggest impact of anyone at school.”

And, of course, there is the role only a mother can fulfill.

“My mom is a really strong person. She has pushed me to get to where I am today,” Taylor said. “She encourages me to be involved and to get good grades.”

While she’s headed to one of the largest universities in the nation in the capital city of the Lone Star State, Taylor still holds close the values of rural Huckabay.

“Huckabay is great because it’s such a tight-knit community,” she said. “Everyone is very close, so you feel like you’re around family everywhere you go.”
