(December 9, 2016) — While partnered with others, Luke Brown and Jake Long each came painstakingly close to winning world championships in team roping.

Now roping together, Brown, a header from Stephenville, and Long, a heeler from Morgan Mill, may finally get over the top and raise the best gold buckle of them all.

Brown and Long made the money for the sixth time in eight rounds at the 2016 National Finals Rodeo Thursday evening, roping head and heels in 4.7 seconds to pocket another $6,769. It pushed their season earnings to more than $211,000 for Brown and more than $208,000 for Long.

More important than their current leads – Brown is first by $8,800+ in heading and Long by about $15,150 in heeling – is that Brown and Long are one only five team to successfully rope seven of the first eight head, and they currently lead header Clay Smith and Lipan heeler Paul Eaves by 6.2 seconds in the average.

If Brown and Long can handle the final two head successfully Friday and Saturday, they will win the average – and the world.

Jacobs Crawley is in a similar situation, but not by leading the average. Crawley is currently third in the average with 579 points on seven successful rides. He’s five points behind Zeke Thurston and a ride behind Jake Watson with two rounds remaining. Crawley entered the event with a big lead and is currently ahead by almost $52,000. He tops the projected world standings, which are based on current earnings and plus the payout for their rank in the average at the NFR.

Wesley Thorp, heeler from Stephenville and 2016 College National Finals Rodeo champion for Ranger College, placed second in team roping with partner Zac Small. They earned more than $20,000 each in 4.2 seconds. Smith and Eaves were sixth in 5.5.

Round 9 begins at 9 p.m. (CST) Friday and can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
