(December 20, 2016) — Ridell Camidge took an assist from Deshawn Riddick and finished through contact for the ‘And-1’ then added the game-winning free throw with four seconds left before Western Washington missed at the buzzer and Tarleton held on, 84-83, in a wild, back-and-forth battle between perennial national powers to conclude the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas Monday night.

The No. 15 Texans (11-1) won their eighth straight because Camidge made big shot after big shot on his way to a season-high 27 points in a thriller featuring a whopping 25 lead changes at Dolittle Community Center, where the Vikings had the ball and a 83-81 lead before a missed 3 by Trey Dreschel was rebounded by Romond Jenkins with 16 seconds left to set up the game-winning possession.

Jenkins earned his third straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. It was the fifth time the senior center has doubled up in the last seven games, missing by one rebound in each of the other two. He was 7-9 form the floor, while Camidge was 10-16 including 6-10 from the arc. They were joined in double figures by Riddick with 11 points alongside a career-high nine assists, and Josh Hawley with 11 points off the bench.

No.12 Western Washington (8-2) entered the classic undefeated but also lost to West Texas A&M, which is just half a game behind Tarleton in the Lone Star Conference standings as teams break for Christmas. LSC teams – unbeaten Angelo State was the other – were a perfect 6-0 at the classic.

The Vikings were up 83-78 with 1:32 remaining before a 3 by – who else – Camidge. He closed the gap to 83-81 with 1:09 remaining as part of a personal 6-0 run to end the game.

Taylor Stafford missed a jumper but the rebound went out of bounds to WWU, which called a timeout with 37 seconds remaining. Even on the second chance, Dreschel couldn’t connect and the Texans went the other way to win it.

WWU managed to shoot 50.9 percent, but that fell significantly after the Vikings hit 57.7 percent in the first half. They were 12 of 27, 44.4 percent, from the arc. Tarleton shot 47.8 percent and was 8 of 21, 38.1 percent, from the arc, ending its streak of four consecutive games with at least 10 3-pointers.

But the Texans continued their trend of dominating the backboards, out-rebounding the Vikings, 39-27 including 20-9 on the offensive glass. That led to a 25-6 advantage in second-chance scoring, much of that damage coming from Jenkins.

WWU scored the most points Tarleton has allowed this season, but the Texans kept alive an impressive streak of now 209 games without allowing 90 points.

Tarleton welcomes Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) to Stephenville for its next action on December 31. Tipoff at Wisdom Gym is set for 4 p.m.
