STEPHENVILLE (December 20, 2016) — Blake Aragon took an alley-oop lob from Clay Krause and slammed it down with 20 seconds remaining Tuesday afternoon, putting an exclamation mark on a 53-39 win by Stephenville over Glen Rose to begin 8-4A district play at Gandy Gym.
The Yellow Jackets outscored Glen Rose 25-16 after halftime, pulling away after clinging to just a 28-23 margin at the break. They did it behind 14 points by Mason Holstein and 11 by Aragon including not only the alley-oop slam late in the fourth but also a breakaway late in the third.
Coby Vandenberg also scored 11 for the Jackets, while Cole Pettit added seven. Braden Hayes and Krause each netted three.
The Jackets outscored Glen Rose 11-5, in the third, with Aragon’s first dunk making it 42-28 late in the period.
“I call that big ‘Mo,’ says second-year Stephenville head coach Bill Brooks. “That’s ‘momentum, and it’s always fun to have big ‘Mo’ on your side.”
Holstein’s big performance came on a return from injury.
“He’s been hurt the past three weeks so he’s rested up now. Clearly he’s important to us,” Brooks said. “He’s important on both ends of the court, especially on defense.”
Brooks said the tough early schedule was designed to get Stephenville ready for this game and the rest of the district schedule to follow.
“It feels great to get some momentum going our way,” said Brooks. “Everything we’ve done in our tough preseason schedule was to get us ready for this day.”
