STEPHENVILLE (April 5, 2017) – The accolades for former Texan football star Cody Burtscher continue to pour in as the recent Tarleton State University graduate was named to the 2017 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from across all divisions of play who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better through their college careers. In its 11th year, the NFF Hampshire Honor Society welcomed 1,091 players from 298 schools this year. Over its 11 years, the NFF Hampshire Honor Society has recognized 7,725 student-athletes from across the country.

Burtscher is coming off a banner year after a stellar senior season on and off the field for the Texans.
A native of Glen Rose, he was named the second player in Tarleton football history to earn All-America recognition from the American Football Coaches Association, as well as earning honorable mention All-America honors with the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team. He was a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-America selection, D2CCA first-team all-region, first-team All-Lone Star Conference, academic All-LSC, and the Lone Star Conference Linebacker of the Year. Earlier this year, he was also named a national semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell trophy and the national Cliff Harris Award that recognizes the top defensive players in the country.
Burtscher finished the season as the Lone Star Conference leader in tackles with 117 while tacking on 6.0 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and three interceptions. He was also named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week after lifting the Texans to a 35-5 win over Angelo State in September. He also boasted a 3.93 grade point average as a bio-medical science major and graduated in December.
He came to Tarleton in 2013 after a standout career at Glen Rose High School where he starred on both sides of the football – earning All-State honors as a running back and safety. Upon arrival in Stephenville, Burtscher spent his first two seasons on the offensive side before transitioning to linebacker prior to the 2015 season. Over his two years on defense, Burtscher has amassed 218 tackles, including 15.0 for a loss and 9.0 sacks.
