STEPHENVILLE (September 21, 2017) – The Erath County Sheriff’s Department held a press conference Thursday morning in an effort to be more transparent, according to Erath County Sheriff Matt Coates.

Coates reported that while many members of the press and the community have been wondering about the ongoing investigation, his department has minimal knowledge of the investigation. According to the sheriff, TCOLE investigated the department for violations of licensing and the AG’s office has been investigating possible other incidents within the department. He said his department is not involved in the investigation and therefore do not know much about what is currently going on.

However, Coates did make one thing clear – those involved in the investigation were no longer working with the department. Some have been let go or not rehired, while others have left on their own. No one currently working at the Erath County Sheriff’s Office is under investigation.

The sheriff did say he understands why some are getting frustrated with the long investigation.

“I have been in communication with the investigators and, while they won’t tell us much about their ongoing investigation, which I can appreciate, I have gotten frustrated with the waiting,” said Coates while talking to press Thursday morning about the ongoing TCOLE and Attorney General’s Office investigation into the department. “I have asked to be informed if anyone who was originally named in this investigation is cleared and I have received one name – Bobby Mendez.”

At this time, Coates said Mendez, who is currently serving as Chief of Police in the Dublin Police Department, is the only former ECSO employee who has been cleared.

Coates went on to say that the department has undergone a number of changes in the ten months since he has been the sheriff, and those changes have helped the department work well. Watch the full press conference below:
